Nicolas Cage plays unhinged cop in Bad Lieutenant

y Mike Collett-White and Cindy Martin VENICE, Sept 4 (Reuters Life!) - Actor Nicolas Cage plays a deranged, drug-addicted detective in "Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans", re-visiting the corrupt cop role made famous by Harvey Keitel 17 years ago.

Despite the similarity in title to Abel Ferrara's 1992 cult classic "Bad Lieutenant", and Ferrara's obvious displeasure at the idea of a remake, Cage and German director Werner Herzog say their movie is not connected.

"It would be unfair to compare the two movies," Cage told Reuters in an interview in Venice, where the picture is in competition at the annual film festival.

"Harvey's trajectory is really dealing with guilt and all of that, and perhaps fits more into that (Judeo-Christian) programme, so to me it's a completely different story and a different cop," added the 45-year-old, who won a best actor Oscar for playing an alcoholic in "Leaving Las Vegas".

"This is a New Orleans cop, it takes place in New Orleans, it's Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans, it's not Bad Lieutenant." Ferrara has criticised the idea of a remake, and was quoted in the media as saying: "I wish these people die in hell." The fact that Ferrara is also due in Venice with another picture has only heightened media interest in the row, although Herzog said he had not seen the original.

"I have never seen this film," Herzog told Reuters. "I only know it has nothing to do with it, because the screenwriter explained to me the other film ... and we knew it was not in any way related." He said the title was the result of pressure from one of his producers to turn his movie into "some sort of a franchise", and that he had insisted on adding "Port of Call New Orleans" to differentiate it from the 1992 film.

When asked about Ferrara's criticism, Herzog added: "I have absolutely no problem. However, I would like that Abel Ferrara sees my film and if I know he sees mine I will promise him that I will see his film." FLAWED HERO Cage portrays homicide detective Terence, who busts young party-goers in order to steal drugs for his own consumption and accept sexual favours along the way.

Constantly snorting cocaine and smoking crack, all the while protecting his prostitute girlfriend played by Eva Mendes, he closes in on a drug baron he suspects of executing a family of Senegalese immigrants.

For Cage, his character is a good, if flawed, officer.

"He's in a sense part of his environment, he's trying to operate within an environment which has a drug culture and a street culture, so how do you survive in that world?" Partly set in the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the movie portrays the corruption of authority through Terence's excesses and mobsters moving in on redevelopment projects.

Cage said he wanted to work in New Orleans, having had "an awakening" in the city which he declined to describe.

"It can be a scary place, so I needed to go back there to make the movie to know that I could".

Hollywood publication Variety's Todd McCarthy gave the movie, and Cage, a mixed review: "Sometimes he's so over the top it's funny, which one can hope was intentional," he wrote.

"The film is offbeat, silly, disarming and loopy all at the same time, and viewers will decide to ride with that or just give up on it, according to mood and disposition." (Editing by Steve Addison)

(February 6, 2007) Canadian-American actress Pamela Anderson may be planning to seek refuge in Chile after her divorce from redneck rocker Kid Rock was finalized this week. After a hush trip to the country’s southern lakes region last month, Chile’s local media reported Tuesday that the blond bombshell and former Baywatch babe purchased a one acre property in Huerquehue Park on which she plans to construct a summer house.

The property, part of the Santa María de Carburgua condominium resort, is close to the beautiful, and elite, Caburgua, a resort town near the southern city of Temuco. Nearly 800 kilometers south of Chile’s capital city, Santiago, Chile’s President Michelle Bachelet has a house on the nearby lake, as does her recent presidential rival and millionaire businessman Sebastián Piñera.

Anderson, who shot to fame in the 1990’s as a Playboy playmate, Baywatch star, and “unauthorized” sex-tape vixen, made the trip to the southern cone country with her father, Barry Anderson.

“They came about a month ago,” said Hugo Solís, a local driver who drove Barry Anderson to the town center of Caburgua. “She (Pamela) didn’t want to leave the resort where they were staying. Her father seemed like a very educated, friendly person, and no one here imagined that they had so much money. I felt bad that I didn’t get to see Pam though, which, like any other man, would have made me very happy,” he concluded.

Local authorities said that the Andersons had turned down police escorts and that their principle goal was to go unnoticed, find a suitable place to relax and carry out their business.

“They were not here for very long,” said the local police chief. “The father went fishing for a bit and that’s the only time I saw him.

While Pamela’s father was seen around town, the A-list star known for B-list endeavors was not spotted publicly and spent her time reading and enjoying the countryside.

Alfonso Sarabia, a Caburgua local who for 16 years has transported high profile people on his boat, The Titanic, said that the town was very happy for their new neighbor. “The father first passed himself as an ordinary tourist, but when we found out who he was, we felt very happy that they had decided to come and buy a house in this part of the world,” he said. “Imagine that we will all be “Pamilita’s” neighbors! All of Chile will envy us.”

Sarabia told Chile’s Las Ultimas Noticias tabloid that he had helped Pamela onto his boat. “She’s precious, but simple, just like any other woman,” he added.

Sarabia said that Anderson was just one of many famous people to grace The Titanic with their presence. “The other day President Michelle Bachelet was on the boat transporting material to fix up her house here. Piñera has been on the boat several times too,” he said. “I can’t tell you all the names of the people that ride my boat. I remember a lot of gringo actors and singers, but I prefer the Chilean artists…I also like the Frei family members (referring to the family of two former Chilean presidents).”

While Anderson’s new digs were dubbed in Chile’s press as “exclusive,” a similar one-acre lot can be had for as little as US$50,000 according to an executive at Río Baker Investments, the company in-charge of the project. The executive added that they had offices in California and boasted many other exclusive clients.

Chile’s south, known for its beauty as well as its isolation, is frequently visited by many international celebrities who seek to escape the limelight by traveling to the end of the world. Visitors to Chile’s south can head to the famed town of Pucón, visit thermal spas and beaches, climb volcanoes, ski, and visit the Patagonia.

Pamela Anderson and Kid Rock each filed divorce papers recently seeking to end their marriage of less than four months. Anderson’s representative would not comment on the reason or any particulars of the divorce. Anderson and Rock, whose real name is Robert Ritchie, each cited “irreconcilable differences” in their divorce filings in Los Angeles County Superior Court.

“Yes, it’s true,” Anderson wrote in a brief statement on her website. “Unfortunately impossible.” A message left with Ritchie’s attorney wasn’t immediately returned.

The relationship between Anderson, 39, and Ritchie, 35, has been a turbulent one since they were engaged in 2002. They broke up the following year, but later reunited and held several wedding ceremonies over the summer.They got married in late July near St. Tropez, France, and again at a courthouse in Beverly Hills on Aug. 3. They also tied the knot in an Aug. 17 ceremony in Nashville, Tenn.

The pair filed separate divorce petitions, about an hour apart, early Monday. Anderson reported their separation date as Nov. 21; Ritchie said it was Nov. 26. First word of the split was reported by ’The Insider’ syndicated news magazine. Anderson’s spokeswoman, Tracy Nguyen, confirmed earlier this month that the actress had suffered a miscarriage.

The actress has two sons, Brandon, 10, and Dylan, 8, from her marriage to rocker Tommy Lee. Ritchie, a Michigan native who owns a condo in Nashville, has a 13-year-old son, Bob Jr.

When Viacom kingpin Sumner Redstone cited Tom Cruise's personal conduct as the reason for killing his production deal with Paramount, the 83-year-old mogul's candor rocked Hollywood. But Radar has learned Redstone may have let Cruise off easy, particularly in light of allegations the actor dispatched goons from the Church of Scientology to intimidate Redstone's studio chieftan, Brad Grey.

According to a high-ranking media executive, Paramount Pictures honcho Grey had a highly unpleasant run-in with the Church during his tense negotiations with Cruise over Mission: Impossible 3. Grey, who had recently joined the studio, entered the talks determined to make Cruise accept a smaller share of the gross revenues than he had from the first two installments in the franchise. (For those films, the actor reportedly took home an unheard-of 30 percent of the total revenue.) Leaving the office one night, the diminutive Grey, walking to his car in the Paramount lot, suddenly found himself surrounded by more than a dozen Scientologists, who pressured him to ease up on the actor, according to the source.

Following a terse exchange, the visitors allowed Grey to get into his car and leave, but the message was clear. Though he was unnerved by the incident, sources say, Grey stood his ground. After protracted negotiations, Cruise eventually agreed to a less generous deal.

Neither Grey nor Paramount responded to repeated queries, but a spokeswoman from the Church of Scientology disputes the report, saying, "The Church has nothing to do with anybody's business affairs." But to many Hollywood veterens, the incident is reminiscent of another recent backlot battle:

In the late nineties, John Travolta furiously lobbied reluctant former Fox studio chief Bill Mechanic to produce Battlefield Earth, the science-fiction stinker based on a story by Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard. "He had Scientologists all over me," Mechanic told Radar last year. "They come up to you and they know who you are." Despite the religion's reputation for intimidating its enemies, Mechanic, like Grey, was unswayed: "Do you think in any way, shape, or form that weirding me out is going to make me want to make this movie?" he said.

This year Matt LeBlanc has lost a wife and a TV show. Now, he's being sued by an exotic dancer, who took exception to an interview he gave about her last year in which he called her "sexually aggressive."

Yes, I'm serious.

Follow me here, peeps: Last summer, the married Friends star had a night of sexual debauchery with a stripper named Stephanie Stephens. The situation got out of hand (read: he probably slept with her, then word leaked to the media), so Matthew gave an interview to the National Enquirer where he talked about how a "sexually aggressive" dancer basically took advantage of him at a strip club. He said she tried to seduce him with a lap dance and offered sexual favors.

Now, this lady is suing Matthew for his comments. In her lawsuit she says she was never sexually aggressive toward LeBlanc, nor did she made sexual requests or give him a lap dance. The filing also says that "all sexual contact between the defendant and the plaintiff took place in the privacy of [Stephens'] residence."

Meaning: He went home with her and they did the nasty. Yikes!

Matt doesn't have to worry about ticking off his wife anymore – they split earlier this year. He is currently dating his former Joey costar, Andrea Anders, who he hooked up with before his split was announced. They were recently seen running together LA's Runyon Canyon.

Wonder if this is going to also work against him in his divorce from his wife, Melissa. Word has it, the divorce has not been finalized. This may cost him a couple more mil!

The hotel heiress was named among 50 SpoofCard users who have had their accounts terminated for allegedly changing what others see on their caller ID display when they receive a phone call.
It has been reported one of the victims of the phone pranks was Hilton's party scene rival Lohan. Last month (JUL06), Hilton was accused in the New York Post of hacking into the actress' BlackBerry and sending offensive messages which appeared to have come from Lohan.
However, Hilton's representative ELLIOT MINTZ retorts, "The comments do not accuse Paris of violating Lindsay's voice mail.

It's hard to turn on the television today without seeing a commercial selling the next best diet plan. Now, marketing companies have found a new selling tool: celebrity status.

Anna Nicole Smith is no stranger to celebrity. With a modeling campaign and reality series under her belt, she has become one of the more famous celebrity dieters.

Back in April of 2003, Smith started following the TrimSpa diet plan in which she took an Ephedra-free pill before every meal. It takes 10 days for it to kick in.

“That really shrinks your stomach,” Smith tells The Early Show co-anchor Rene Syler, “It really shrinks until you can’t eat much and you’re not hungry. So, I’ve had to taper off the pills. I take like two a day now. I don’t take six a day anymore.”

She notes, “It’s really hard to eat, because, for me, it’s like I’ve lost my appetite. So I have to really, really push myself to eat.”

She wouldn’t say how much she used to weigh. “I’m never going to tell you how much I weighed.” Nor how much weight she has lost, “Can’t tell. You got to watch it on my special on Feb. 22 on E!”

She did tell Syler at this point she is a lot smaller than when she did the commercial endorsing the diet plan and would even like to get back to the way she was at the time she did the shoot.

Asked why she decided to lose weight in the first place, since for a while she seemed comfortable in her own skin, Smith says, “I wasn’t unhappy at all until just everybody just started ridiculing me so bad. I just got to the point that it was just like, 'My God, you know. Just shut up, everybody. What is the big deal?’ And then I just looked in the mirror. I’m like, 'I am fat!'”

Soon after, she says, she started working for a diet product. She says, “I just came across TrimSpa. And I started taking that. And then, amazingly enough, TrimSpa called Howard, my manager, and my best friend. And they called him and wanted me to be a spokesmodel for TrimSpa. And I was like this is great. It’s absolutely working.”
